With All Due Respect

Ed, Where are you? Still at the Super Bowl or what? I'm missing your column so I hope all is well with you and you start writing again soon. Cheryl Ü

Hello there SportsHollywood.comers! Sorry I have been away for so long, but I needed some time to celebrate my Super Bowl column in which I laid out how the New England Patriots would be able beat the St. Louis Rams. Although I did pick the Rams to win the game, that in my book is only a formality! My belated congratulations to the Patriots on their amazing performance, and I look forward to the new season to see how they handle being the new team to beat.

I also have to thank the readers who were astute and sweet enough to email me birthday wishes last week! I'm flattered you guys would even know when my birthday is, much less email me congratulations! Thanks again from the bottom of my heart.

I've been off the last few months golfing and fishing across the great USA. In February I had the opportunity to play with a bunch of sports and Hollywood types in Dan Marino's golf tournament which benefits autistic children. Recently I was in Palm Springs to play the Nabisco LPGA tournament Pro-Am, where I was paired with (guys start drooling now!) Carin Koch of Sweden. Carin recently won an internet poll in which she was picked as the golfer readers would most like to see in Playboy. Sorry guys, but she has no interest in that career path and is happily married with a baby. I have to say she is as nice as she is beautiful, and she thoroughly kicked my butt all over the course!

For those of you in the vicinity of southwest Florida, I will be hosting a charity fishing tournament at Palm Island Resort April 25th and 26th. The event will raise money for cystic fibrosis, and I would love to see some SportsHollywood readers there, so mark your calendars!

I'm also preparing to do a guest shot on NBC's Third Watch in the coming week or so. I'm really excited because I get to play a firefighter, as well as the fact I'll be sharing the "special guest star" label with a couple of my old Hill Street Blues pals, Bruce Weitz and Veronica Hamel. They tell me the episode should air sometime at the end of April and I will of course keep you updated!

Ok, now the world of sports...

Well, there hasn't been any arrests, shootings or drug busts as of late, so in that regards no new is good news.

I'm not a huge basketball fan, college or pro, but I have to say the Final Four, especially the performance of Indiana and the coaching of Mike Davis, deserves a lot of respect. This guy took a fractured team after the dismissal of Booby Knight and gelled them into a strong group of winners.

Barry Bonds...

What is this guy eating? At an age when any pro athlete is slowing down physically, Bonds is starting off 2002 just the way he ended 2001. 4 homers in 2 games is truly a testament to this guy's dedication to his sport.

Speaking of Bonds, baseball has of course started up, but to tell the truth with all the teams in the league now, with all the games to watch, I'd rather just watch the ESPN highlights than an entire game. To me, the last two weeks of the season and the playoffs are the most exciting time in baseball.

What is exciting to me, is golf! Big surprise, right? Well, I am looking forward to the Masters beginning next week in Augusta. If anybody out there is a member of Augusta National, I just want you to know that I can be there within a couple of days!

All right guys, that is all for now. Remember to watch out for The Third Watch on NBC and I promise we won't go this long again without chatting!

Ed Marinaro
In his three seasons as Cornell's tailback, Ed Marinaro was the all-time leading rusher in Ivy League history. He established eight NCAA career records and was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy. After turning pro he became a running back for the New York Jets, Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks. Then he turned to acting and played everyone from Joe Coffey on the classic TV show "Hill Street Blues" to Joey Buttafuoco in "Long Island Lolita."

In his off-time he enjoys ranting in his column for SportsHollywood.
