10 Questions with Nicole Kathryn

Nicole Kathryn is an actress, dancer and model who recently moved to Southern California to pursue a career in film, and began working almost immediately. You may have already seen her as "Miss Montana" in the Sandra Bullock film, Miss Congeniality, or in various episodes of Just Shoot Me and That 70's Show on TV.

How did she get all of this acting work so fast? It all starts with her presence, which comes from her statuesque 5'8" frame and years of dance training in ballet, hip-hop, salsa, meringue, and jazz. She walks with fluidity and grace of a ballerina -- not an actress -- which is a pretty big accomplishment when she's moving through a commissary full of hungry Teamsters, movie extras and office clerks at Universal Studios, where we're having lunch.

But she is also a pretty good kickboxer, which may be another reason that even the Teamsters stay out of her way. She can not only kick gracefully -- she can knock you out!

Sports have always been a major part of her life. Besides knocking the stuffing out of starlets in kickboxing matches (and there's always a lot of stuffing in Hollywood starlets), she also plays volleyball, swims, shoots hoops, and ice skates. But her real love is football.

Her specialty is college football. Texas football. She can spout odds, schedules, career records, and anything else you need to know.

But her real love is the Dallas Cowboy franchise. Nicole grew up dreaming of being a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader (you can see a young Nicole in her Cowboys jacket below).

But now it's starting to look like one day Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders will be dreaming of becoming her.

TEN QUESTIONS

SportsHollywood: What's your favorite sports movie?

KATHRYN: Any Given Sunday. I love football, I love Oliver Stone movies -- and I really loved watching a movie where a woman owned the team!

SportsHollywood: Least favorite sports movie?

KATHRYN: Slap Shot. (Sees the heartbroken face of the interviewer.) I didn't see all of it. Maybe I would have liked it more if I saw the whole thing...

SportsHollywood: I almost hate to ask this, because I know the answer, but what is your favorite sports team?

KATHRYN: The Dallas Cowboys. And if you're thinking of a Cowboys crack right now, keep your mouth shut.

SportsHollywood: Most hated sports team:

KATHRYN: Like all Cowboys fans, I hate the Redskins, 49ers and Eagles. Which I guess means I like the Rams for beating the Eagles -- hey, aren't they owned by a woman, too? Okay, I definitely like the Rams.

SportsHollywood: Who is your favorite athlete? Michael Irvin? Nate Newton? Erik Williams? Another convicted Cowboy?

KATHRYN: I said there would be no more Cowboys cracks. Anyway, my favorite athlete would actually be Brian Urlacher of the Chicago Bears, so there. He was a legend during his college days in New Mexico, where my family lives. We all still follow him in Chicago. We used to follow the Bulls, too, because of New Mexico grad Luc Longley (and some guy named "Jordan," or something).

SportsHollywood: Least favorite athlete: Michael Irvin? Nate Newton? Erik Williams?

KATHRYN: You're treading on very thin ice.

SportsHollywood: Remember a few years ago when police arrested Barry Switzer for carrying a loaded revolver at the airport? He said he had it because he was instituting a run and shoot offense.

KATHRYN: Ha.

SportsHollywood: Here's a good one: A lady in Dallas calls 911. Hysterically, she says, "Someone just broke into my house, and I think he's going to attack me!" The police officer says, "I'm sorry, we're really busy at the moment. Just get the guy's jersey number and we'll get back to you."

KATHRYN: (Sigh.)

SportsHollywood: Okay, okay... On that note, how tough is it to be a Cowboys fan in California?

KATHRYN: It's MISERABLE! Although now that they suck I'm starting to get more pity than hate.

SportsHollywood: Favorite Texas football moment:

KATHRYN: That one brief moment last year when there weren't any Cowboys in jail. No, it would have to be the inaugural Big 12 Championship Game in 1996, when my alma mater, the University of Texas, beat Nebraska 37-27. We were three-touchdown underdogs, but we set up the winning TD with a sixty-yard pass completion on fourth and inches! Greatest fourth quarter ever.

SportsHollywood: How did you get started in show business?

KATHRYN: I started out as a dancer and ended up in some music videos. It has just kind of veered into acting.

SportsHollywood: Now that you're in L.A., what's your favorite basketball team?

KATHRYN: Lakers, baby. I'm really just waiting for L.A. to get another football team. I like the violent sports.

SportsHollywood: Here's a good one: Ray Lewis was arrested again last week for attempted murder. He faces 3-5 years in prison or two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys.

KATHRYN: I don't think Leno will be stealing that one. You may laugh, but Texas now has the best prison football teams anywhere...

(Lunch is over -- Nicole has an audition and the writer has to rent her a copy of Slap Shot.)
