One Heartbeat: A Philosophy of Teamwork, Life and Leadership

"...Even after the rest of the body has shut down, the hearts keeps on beating. When it is the only thing remaining, it still is trying to keep on going. And in that space, it is no longer the heart, but the soul."
-- Bill Little

University of Texas football coach Mack Brown teams with award-winning writer Bill Little to craft the poignant ONE HEARTBEAT: A PHILOSOPHY OF TEAMWORK, LIFE AND LEADERSHIP.

It is an anthology of pieces from the heart - a collection of thoughts and stories from a people person who is far from finished with his journey in life, who understands the legend of the hills: that valleys lead to peaks, and from each vista, there is a higher summit still ahead.

One Heartbeat chronicles the life and times of college football coach, Mack Brown, who has had the distinction of building winning programs at Texas, North Carolina, and Tulane -- yet it is not about him-or football... It is about how to live life-what to hold on to and what to discard. It is about the people who have touched him and taught him. It is about the joy of coaching; not only the thrill of winning, but the quiet peace of watching a kid grow into a man with values to make a difference. It is about a profession that-even in the hard times-can have gut-level rewards.

With the foreword by legendary Texas coach Darrell Royal, this is a book for the young and the old, the teacher and the high school coach, the mom and the dad, the players who've made it on the field and those who want to.

SportsHollywood recently caught up with award-winning writer Bill Little, who is one of the most respected writers in all of college sports, and asked him about collaborating with Mack Brown on this book, and the phenomenon that is, TEXAS FOOTBALL. During thirty-five years of service to The University of Texas, he has received numerous awards for writing, and in 1993 was inducted into the Texas Longhorn Hall of Honor.

A CONVERSATION WITH BILL LITTLE

SportsHollywood: What does the title "One Heartbeat" refer to?

Bill Little: It's from a speech by coach Darrell Royal at a senior's dinner. He told the players that in order to win, they needed to come together and play as one heartbeat. And that became the theme of the team.

We were searching for a title that would really sum up what the book is about - so that's what we went with.

SportsHollywood: A big part of Mack Brown's success is not just on the field, but off it as well.

Bill Little: This is coach Brown's fifth season at UT, so his graduation rate for his first recruits is just coming around. But of the kids who played for him and stayed four years at North Carolina, the last figures were that 82% of the kids that played for him graduated.

SportsHollywood: And a lot of those figures are skewed by kids who turn pro early.

Bill Little: Leonard Davis, an outstanding lineman two years ago, probably needed about 12 hours to graduate, but got an offer for $13 million to play pro.

SportsHollywood: A well-educated guy would recognize that's over a million per hour…

Bill Little: I think we probably helped Leonard with his education in that sense.

SportsHollywood: When he's done playing football, I think he can attend any University he wants…

Bill Little: … Or just buy one.

SportsHollywood: Who is the most outstanding all around player at UT?

Bill Little: The guy who made the biggest impression on me was James Street, simply because he never lost. As a starting quarterback, he was 20-0! And what he's done with his life after football really is incredible.

"Our goal is to win championships with nice kids who are graduating. We may be in the entertainment business on the weekends, but we are in the education business during the week.”
— Mack Brown
SportsHollywood: Give me a couple of anecdotes from "One Heartbeat."

Bill Little: Coach Brown was reluctant to write this book at first, but I told him that "the things you say, people want to hear and people want to know." So coach finally gave in to honor the memory of his grandfather, who was the winningest coach in middle Tennessee history. And to help young coaches.

SportsHollywood: And what about you?

Bill Little: I wanted to do something that would make a difference to people. To help change a life. I would have to write the lead-in to a chapter, because Mack won't brag on himself, so I would say what he has accomplished and coach Brown would talk about how.

SportsHollywood: Is this a biography?

Bill Little: No. It's an anthology - not a story about his life. It's a collection of thoughts and real simple logic on life and how to make it better.

SportsHollywood: Why do you suppose football in Texas is so different than anywhere else?

Bill Little: A lot of it has to do with the spirit of the land. Texas by nature is a proud place and there's a lot of hometown pride in small towns, where people rally around their teams.

SportsHollywood: How does that affect coaching and coaches?

Bill Little: The high school coach is one of the last figures involved in the disciplinary role - and in many cases, a fatherly role - to so many kids. That's one thing Mack has done - is reach out to coaches across the state as he began his recruiting at Texas.

SportsHollywood: So this book is really not about football, either?

Bill Little: Is about the love of coaching - and the love of people. There's something in the book that applies to everyone in life. For me, this book is for people. For Mack, it was for young coaches - in order to help young people.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The last thing Bill and Mack did was a tribute to the guys on the United Flight on 9-11, because they were all athletes, and that's the message of sports. You use your will, even when you're in the face of terrible odds.
