SportsHollywood went to Laguna Seca Raceway for the Honda Grand Prix of Monterey, the 16th race on Championship Auto Racing Teams’ (CART) 20-race schedule. , and featured the fastest race cars known to man: the 900-horsepower carbon fiber and titanium CART Champ Cars of the FedEx Championship Series. The race was a 190 mile-per-hour game of intense precision and steely nerves, played by the greatest drivers in the world. (And, unlike in NASCAR, sometimes they actually turned right!)

Memo Gidley is a driver for Della Penna Motorsports. He began his professional driving career in 1994, and his Champ Car career in 1999. Memo is one of the most popular drivers in CART (especially if you count the girls constantly surrounding him), and his official web site is http://www.memogidley.com.

Mears
Casey Mears
Casey Mears is a driver on the Dayton Indy Lights. He is the son of former CART Champ Car driver Roger Mears, and the nephew of three-time CART champion Rick Mears. Casey appeared as an extra on FOX TV show Party of Five last year.

Mears and Gidney are considered two of the funniest guys in CART. So SportsHollywood caught up with them between laps and and got some pretty racy answers about about life in the fast lane (how's that for pithy turn-of-phrase):

TEN QUESTIONS

Cruise Control
SportsHollywood: What's your favorite racing movie?

GIDLEY: "The only one I've ever seen, which is Days of Thunder. I thought it was really good when I saw it 'cause I wasn't in racing, but now I think it's kind of stupid... but it's still really funny."

CASEY MEARS: "There's a lot of older movies, but I'm going to go with Days of Thunder, just because that's the most recent."

SportsHollywood: Least favorite racing movie?

GIDLEY: "Days of Thunder. That's the only racing movie I've ever watched."

SportsHollywood: What actor would you like to play you in a movie?

CASEY MEARS: "Val Kilmer, just because I like the guy."

CASEY MEARS: "Oh... probably 130mph, on a motorcycle 145mph."

GIDLEY: "About 150mph."

Dario and Judd
Dario Franchitti with his fiancée, Ashley Judd.
SportsHollywood: When Ashley Judd finally dumps fiancée (and fellow CART driver) Dario Franchitti are you ready to pounce?

CASEY MEARS: "Oh yeah, I'm waiting in line."

GIDLEY: "Too high maintenance."

SportsHollywood: Do you ever flip off the crowd when you zoom past?

GIDLEY: "Mmm...no."

CASEY MEARS: (laughing) "Heck no."

SportsHollywood: When you get a flat on you street car do you have to call on the pit crew?

CASEY MEARS: "Every now and then, yeah." (semi-serious)

GIDLEY: "I just keep driving."

Tecate Girls
Sorry, girls.
SportsHollywood: Would you rather take the pole at Fontana, or pole the Tecate girls at the Fontana Holiday Inn?

CASEY MEARS: "That's a tough one! Because it hasn't happened yet, I'm going to have to go with the race, Fontana."

GIDLEY: "I'll take the pole at Fontana."

SportsHollywood: Do you ever use Nomex condoms? (Nomex is a flame retardant fabric in their racing suits)

GIDLEY: (No comment).

CASEY MEARS: "Not yet, but if you've got some I'm willing to try."

SportsHollywood: Do you ever get tired of people asking you how to go to the bathroom in your drivers suit?

CASEY MEARS: "No, I just try to think of some creative answer."

SportsHollywood: So how do you go to the bathroom in your drivers suit?

GIDLEY: "Uh.... (laugh) I don't go to the bathroom in my drivers suit."
