10 Questions with Lance Bass

Lance Bass
He’s the first letter in *NSYNC

The band took its name from the last letters of each of the members’ given names. James Lansten Bass provided the “N”.

Bass was born on May 4, 1979, to Jim and Diane Bass of Mississippi. He has one older sister named Stacy. Lance began singing in the chorus when he was in the seventh grade. In eighth grade Lance auditioned for a spot with the Mississippi Show Stoppers, a state-wide group sponsored by the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Museum located in Jackson, Mississippi. He later became a member of a competition choir called Attache. At Clinton High School, Lance's favorite subjects were math and science, and he was good at them. In fact, Bass is said to have passed the entrance exam to NASA. He is a discerning reader, naming Nobel Prize winner Elie Wiesel his favourite author.

Lance
Bass met his fellow *NSYNC-ers through his voice coach, and shortly thereafter the five were touring Europe. They recorded their debut self-titled album in 1998, and immediately following its success (seven million copies sold) with Home For Christmas (1998). The band then released No Strings Attached in 2000.

Next up, Lance is starring with fellow *NSYNCster Joey Fatone in the Miramax movie, On the Line. The film will also star a host of professional athletes, pop stars and movie stars. The romantic comedy is about a young man (Bass) who is on a Chicago train when he has a chance encounter with a girl he thinks may be his soul mate. He doesn't get her phone number, so he and a friend, played by Fatone, try to find her by putting posters up all over town. In the process, the two become local celebrities. The film opens on October 26.

"Acting is a nice change from music because you're actually in the same city and in the same bed every night," adds Lance Bass. "But it's also a lot more detailed. In music you just get up on the stage and everything's about being as big as you can, because people aren't going to notice every little thing. But with acting, the camera picks up every little move and look so it's much more emotionally intense."

We caught up with Lance at the SportsHollywood / A Happy Place party at the Sundance Film Festival, and gave the first letter in *NSYNC the last word on sports, music and movies.

TEN QUESTIONS

SportsHollywood: What's your favorite sport?

BASS: Tie between football and baseball. I played both.

SportsHollywood: Least favorite sport?

BASS: To play or watch?

SportsHollywood: Both

BASS: I'm the worst at basketball, but I love to play. Weird, huh?

SportsHollywood: Do you play in a league, or a neighborhood, half court game?

BASS: No, I don't play at all anymore...I'm terrible. But I do go out and just shoot hoops.

SportsHollywood: Would you say that your free-throw percentage is good?

BASS: It's....okay...

SportsHollywood: Better than Shaq's?

BASS: Oh, yeah, way better that Shaq's... come on..

Lance
SportsHollywood: So you really like baseball?

BASS: Oh, yeah.

SportsHollywood: Would you rather have a hit record, a hit movie, or a hit in Yankee Stadium?

BASS: Oh, umm.....(he looks around, and whispers) .... Yankee Stadium.

SportsHollywood: Why did you want to venture into acting?

BASS: It's something I've always been interested in, since I was little. I was interested in acting before I was in music. I just love to entertain. It's something I wanted to challenge myself with, because I'm definitely not the best actor in the world. So I want to learn - and the best learning experience is just to jump into it and... maybe not do a lead... that was kind of ballsy, but I did.

SportsHollywood: What's harder, acting or touring?

BASS: Definitely a tour is harder. The only reason it's harder is because you have to travel sooooo much! That's the thing I hate about music. When you're acting you can stay in one city. You do a movie and you get to come home to the same bed. With music, I'm never home. I'm always on a bus!

SportsHollywood: What's in your CD player right now?

BASS: I think I have Journey in my car CD player. I got it at a truck stop. "Journey's Greatest Hits!"

SportsHollywood: Is it tougher to learn dialogue than song lyrics?

BASS: Actually, believe it or not, I probably don't know any of our songs, fully. Seriously. I could not repeat the lyrics to any of our songs - that's how bad of a memory I have. I know my part. But I cannot sing any of the leads to anything. Really!
