Daniel Craig

"You'd have to be stupid not to consider something like that. But there's an awful lot of pros and an awful lot of cons. It would go Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan... Daniel Craig? ...I wouldn't want to have to carry the rap for destroying such an amazing sequence."
-Daniel Craig

"There was several things (that influenced me). People usually mention the 'Bourne' saga, which are superb films. They are very rough. But we (Eon) already had that kind of film. If you remember Get Carter and spy films with Michael Caine in the 60's, for example. Those always interested me. And I think that James Bond had a lot of that at first. It disappeared, then returned with Timothy Dalton. I always integrate cinematic influences in my work, and this one counted a lot for Casino Royale."

"Steely blue eyes, check; cruel mouth, check; cold and ruthless manner, check, check; eerie resemblance to songwriter Hoagy Carmichael -- actually, now that you mention it, yeah."
-Mary McNamara, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

"Daniel Craig brings to Bond the killer instinct. He's quite sensational in the movie... I saw a screening of it (Skyfall) a couple of weeks ago. It not only guarantees another 50 years of Bond but probably 100. It's quite extraordinary."
- Roger Moore to AMY EVERETT at Entertainmentwise.com, 11/10/2012

"It's a good time to go with a grittier Bond. The super-suave spy doesn't have the credibility it did in the '60s and '70s...Bond is not a peacock. He is a very tough character. He smoked two packs a day, drank straight vodka. He has the best of everything, but then it's more 'let's get down to business.'"

- Esquire style director Nick Sullivan.

"'We are thrilled to bits. This has come at a very good time in his career. I think he could bring something very interesting to the part. It will be life-changing. But I think he's old enough to handle it."
- Daniel Craig's mother, fooled into leaking the news of his casting before EON could make the announcement.

"The image of James Bond conjures charisma. But [the casting of Craig] follows with what Fleming wrote. Bond was not unattractive, but there was a cruelty about his mouth and he was more real than Hollywood has portrayed him...He looks like he could actually do the sort of things Bond does, which is hard for actors to do since most of them are nice guys who don't pack guns or rappel from helicopters to shoot people."

"Despite not having the 'full head of black hair' described by Ian Fleming, the Chester-born actor is probably closest in build and character to the author's vision. In From Russia With Love, Bond's file reads: "Height, 183cm (6ft); weight 76kg; slim build; eyes, blue... vices, drink, but not to excess, and women. Craig, 37, is 78kg, with blue eyes - and a definite penchant for women. He was implicated in the latest bust-up between Jude Law and Sienna Miller - he allegedly had a fling with the actress - and he has also dated Kate Moss."

"There's a case to be made that Daniel Craig is the best Bond ever, or at least in a very long time ... With Roger Moore it was a pastiche that almost became a parody at the end. And with Pierce [Brosnan], I think he wanted to go darker and deeper but that wasn't what those movies were... The first 25 minutes of Casino Royale? I would have died to have done that"
- Timothy Dalton quoted in Los Angeles Times, November 8, 2012: 'Skyfall': Timothy Dalton says Daniel Craig may be the best 007 ever.

"The question I keep asking myself while playing the role is, 'Am I the good guy or just a bad guy who works for the good side?â' Bond's role, after all, is that of an assassin when you come down to it. I have never played a role in which someone's dark side shouldn't be explored. I don't think it should be confusing by the end of the movie, but during the movie you should be questioning who he is."
