Undercover

"Thank God I didn't write it."
-Richard Maibaum, to "Cinefantastique."

John Payne unsuccessfully attempted to option film rights to the book in 1955, but nothing came of the attempt. The Rank Organisation also took up an option to make a film, but this also eventually fell through.[29] The novel was originally not one of Fleming's novels acquired by Eon Productions in 1961. In 1969 Eon acquired the rights and commissioned Gerry Anderson to produce and co-write a screenplay. Anderson and Tony Barwick prepared a 70 page treatment that was never filmed, but some elements were found to be similar to the final screenplay of The Spy Who Loved Me.

Desmond Llewelyn (Q): "Someone said to Cubby, 'Why are you writing a new story? Ian Fleming's was terrific,' he said, 'Yes, but it's so old-fashioned, it's only got a piddling, little atom bomb in it."

One outtake features one of the crewmen dressed up as a Martian, cleaning the outside of the space station window.

Roger Moore on the name 'Holly Goodhead" (played by Lois Childs): It wasn't my idea, but it's rather clever. Of course, it has an implication of fellatio, but it also means good head - after all, she is a Ph.D., and they give, I mean have, good heads, don't they? I always heard they did. Anyway, I didn't choose the name."
